07/18/23: Carson Street Bridge is officially open to traffic.

Thank you for your patience during this project. This project experienced some setbacks due to common issues plating construction projects everywhere. Such as weather delays, availability of supplies, transportation issues, and labor shortages. But we are happy to say the bridge is back open! *Additional information below

07/05/23: The Carson Street Bridge is looking great!  The sidewalks on both sides of the bridge are done, and next is putting up the railings. The bridge replacement looks beautiful, and we can’t wait to open the road back up. Once the contractor gets the railing up, the road paved and waterproofed, the bridge will be done and available to the community for safe travel for many years. Construction on the bridge started in February 2023 and we anticipate the bridge to be open by late July 2023.

04/17/23: The Carson Street Bridge project is coming right along! Check out these pictures showing the bridge before the project started and during construction. The Carson Street bridge is anticipated to open the first week of June. The contractor is currently in the final steps of connecting utilities and will soon be installing the metal fencing to enhance safety and working on sidewalks, curbs, gutter, and paving.

03/31/23: This week, the Carson Street Bridge achieved a new milestone. Girders were placed, connecting the east side to the west side. The construction project is proceeding according to schedule. After the girders are placed, road work and utility work still need to be completed. The Carson Street Bridge is scheduled to be completed by May 2023.

12/07/22: Starting December 15, 2022, the entire Carson Street Bridge will be closed for reconstruction. Motorists will be detoured to the Custer Street Bridge during the construction. The project is expected to be completed late April 2023.

Detour Map - Carson Street Bridge

The existing Carson Street Bridge was built in 1950 and is approximately 54 feet wide, with a 51-foot span. The bridge was rated as “Poor” in an annual bridge inspection program and replacement was recommended. The deck has severe delamination, spalling, exposed rebar, and steel girders have up to 20% section loss.

Carson Street Bridge is included in a Federal Bridge Bundle Grant that the City of Pocatello partnered with the State of Idaho to obtain. The Federal Bridge Bundle Grant will reconstruct nine bridges within the State of Idaho. The cost of reconstructing Carson Street Bridge is approximately $1.4 million, with the City’s match being $197,987.

The Local Highway Technical Assistance Council represents the State and is tasked to manage the Bridge Bundle Grant. Keller Engineers provided the engineering and Cannon Builders, out of Blackfoot, Idaho, is the construction contractor for this project.
