City Candidate Filing Dates

Candidates for City Council get their names on the ballot by filing Declaration of Candidacy forms. The form indicates the office for which the candidate is running, the term of that office, and confirmation that the candidate is qualified to hold the office, meaning that:

  • The candidate is at least 18 years of age,
  • The candidate is a U.S. citizen,
  • The candidate’s primary residence is within the city limits,
  • The address of the candidate’s voter registration matches the residence address provided on the candidate’s declaration, and
  • The candidate has resided in the city for at least 30 days prior to submitting the declaration.

The Declaration of Candidacy must be accompanied by one of the following:

  1. A Petition of Candidacy signed by at least five qualified city electors with an attached certification from the county clerk verifying the number of valid signatures, OR
  2. A nonrefundable filing fee of $40.
